Poor cats destined to be eaten!
These boxes with thousands of cats wait for their train to Guangzhou (China)
Only 5000 cats were sent there for the last three days.
The cries of these poor animals could be heard far beyond the platform.
Actually, there’s a whole industry that deliver cats for preparation of special dish called «Shui Zhu Hua Mao”.
To prepare this dish, a cook puts a cat into the boiling water.
Then, they take it, clean it, chop and make a soup out of it.
According to statistics, more than 100 thousand cats are eaten everyday in the province of Guangdong.

This article is completely culturally biased. Just because our culture regards some animals as pets (in this case cats) does not mean that it is wrong to eat them. We do much more horrible things to chickens in this country everyday, but it is not as big of a deal since they are not “cute and cuddly.” Besides while cats are eaten in China I do not believe the numbers that the article gives. I would like to know their references.

Those are common house-cats, bred over thousands of years to be companion animals. I remember one discussion of another culturally telling and reprehensible practice of raising St Bernards for consumption in China…the guy discussing it was talking about how easy to keep they were THAT’S BECAUSE THEY CONSIDER YOU FAMILY. China has an ethical black hole with regards to animals…face it, don’t give us that absurd cultural bias smokescreen.

I agree with the previous commenter

Except, of course, the fact that these animals are strays taken from the street and/or are legitimate pets that are wandering outside that happened to get caught. Yea… cultural biased, my ass.

I second the above comment.
People in the west freak out because they find the idea of more than one definition of “normality” really hard to comprehend.
When you have suffered famine on such a massive scale as China has over the course of it’s history, there is obviously going to be an effect on eating – ie you eat whatever you can and you don’t waste much. This is not something a Westerner can truely understand, including myself. My wife’s Chinese and I don’t like some of the stuff she eats, but i can at least understand why she does it.

Chickens are horrible creatures. Bred for the eating of, in nasty, giant sheds full of chicken shit which can pollute the air and water of an area faster than you can say “who the hell farted?”. And oh God the horror of a chicken truck accident. In the summer. In Alabama. Die Chickens! DIE!

Relax. There is nothing culturally biased about the article. It stated some facts and a concern for the animals. You could have replaced cows with cats without much of a problem.

Famine or culture is not an excuse for cruelty!
